How to clean a dishwasher

February 26th, 2008 · No Comments

It’s extremely important that you take care of your dishwasher. Every electronic appliance needs special care. Dishwashers especially need to be cleaned regularly in order to improve or maintain their performance.

We will make this discussion a bit more interaction , A question and answer session on Dishwasher Cleaning.

Question 1) is it safe to use liquid drain cleaner in a dishwasher?

Not a great idea. It will eat out the drain pump, mainly the seals. it will also alot of neoprene (rubber) Parts. If you washer won’t drain, your pump is probably gone. If it drains partially, run about a half gallon of bleach through a rinse cycle. Do it a couple of times.

Question 2) If not Liquid Drain, then is there any easy to use dishwasher cleaning method?

There is a valve at the bottom of you dishwasher that may be damaged by a drain cleaner. However you may be able to solve your problem another way. If you have a garbage disposal you may have a clog that is blocking the exit from your dishwasher. Open you cabinet to see if there is a rubber (usually black) hose running from your dishwasher to your disposal. This is where you can clean out 90% of clogs from dishwashers. You may have to replace this line, but that may take care of your draining problem. Another one of common problems is that someone will replace there disposal and forget to remove the plug from the new disposal.

Question 3) What a best way to clean my dishwasher, I want something easy and cheap.

Tip 1: Run white vinegar thru it a couple of times it will clean out all the gung. if you put a little in with the wash of dishes it will help keep them spottless too.

Tip 2: If you have a food trap, clean that out first. The Bosch dishwashers don’t have grinders. You need to clean the food trap (in the bottom of the dishwasher), and then run it empty with jet dri and your regular dishwashing detergent.

Tip 3:

Use lemon flavored Koolaid. In the first soap cup at least once a month. The citric acid will cut the grease & dissolve some soft particulates on the dishes & in the filter. You may find at first you have to run it once week to get it cleaned out better.

Question 4: Is it safe to clean a washing machine with dishwasher cleaning tablets?

Dishwasher tablets won’t dissolve properly in a washing machine nor will it do any harm. I found this out thru experience when I accidentally put a dishwasher tablet in the laundry instead of a soap tablet.

Vinegar is very good for cleaning a washing machine as it helps break down the limescale and gets rid of any soap residue, also its enviromentally friendly. If you really must get a commercial cleaner for your machine, here’s a link for what you’re looking for.

Finally a great tip to clean your Dishwasher (any brand) from our in-house Dishwasher Expert: Julie Ferns

Starting with an empty washing machine, run HOT water up to the highest washing level your washer offers. When the water is full and the washer begins agitating, add 3 cups of distilled white vinegar (2 cups of lemon juice can be substituted) and 1/2 cup of baking soda to the water. Allow the cycle to run almost completely, advancing it to ’spin’ right as the water starts to drain. By doing this, the washer will spin and drain at the same time. Follow by wiping down the inner tub, removing any residue that has been loosened by the cleansing process. To remove all remaining residue, follow this with a complete COLD water cycle. Adjust your washer’s agitation to high (where you would place it for heavily soiled clothing). This technique should remedy any lingering soap scum or mineral deposits both in the drums of your washing machine and the hoses.

Why Baking Soda and Vinegar?

Baking Soda :: Baking Soda lifts residue effectively from the inner tub of a washing machine to dissolve easily in the wash water, flushing out the pipes/hoses on the way. Because it is so very water soluble, it dissolves before its soft crystalline molecules can scratch or damage a surface. Baking Soda has the power to neutralize odors, instead of just covering them up. It deodorizes by bringing both acidic and basic odor molecules into a neutral state.
Vinegar :: Vinegar is mildly acidic in nature, which makes it ideal for cleaning. It has the ability to eliminate soap residue and build-up on any given surface while neutralizing odors.
Baking soda and vinegar neutralize odors and remove residue.

We hope this article would help you t clean a dishwasher! Remember keep your home appliances clean and green and they would last long.
